I
complained about missing the Sep
20 storm due to being overseas,
but shortly after our return on
sunday Brisbane cops a beauty.
Storms were
always on the cards for today;
there was only conjecture about
how severe it would turn out to
be, if severe at all. Here's the
radar at 4:20pm when I finally
decided to head out:
Greenbank
seemed like a good spot in case
either end of the storm wanted to
drop off as it sometimes does.
The major problem at this time of
the day is traffic, but Greenbank
seemed do-able. It turned out to
be a brilliant spot.
The cells
that I saw all day today didn't
seem to be very photogenic, in
that there was little cell
structure such as wall or shelf
clouds. Lightning was often
obscured by rain but then
sometimes a window of ten minutes
or so would open up with
cloud-to-ground lightning landing
regularly ahead of the
approaching rain. Strangely, I
just happened to be in the right
place at the right time.
The CGs
seem to stop quite abruptly, so I
took the hint and headed north to
stay ahead of it. I stuggled to
find any decent views, but with
light rain falling while I was
driving, I decided to head up the
Centenary Mwy to Mt Coot-tha. I
got there just before the rain.
Here's the
radar at 6:36pm just as the rain
started:
Whilst up
in the rotunda at the summit a
flang hit one of the TV towers,
so I ducked down to another spot
for a view of them in the hope
that one of them would get hit
again. 350 dodgy photos and lots
of very heavy rainfall later and
finally this landed in my view:
I was
stubbornly focused on the towers
while most bolts were landing
further north, so eventually when
the rain eased I returned to the
rotunda.
Eventually,
it was too far north to worry
about.
