A
surprising quickie today. I'd
heard briefly on the radio of the
possibility of a late storm, and
the Bureau's forecast had become
"chance of an afternoon or
evening gusty storm". I
didn't bother with the charts
today, not expecting much, but
after going out for some
Christmas shopping, coming home
and checking the radar around
2pm, I got a surprise!

A small
group of isolated cells was
organising itself into rather a
nice squall line. The southern
end seemed the nicest, judging
from the radar, so I headed south
and stopped again at Greenbank.
Considering
the radar, I was very surprised
not to be seeing some kind of
gustfront... just the above
distinct rain curtain.
The line
was moving along swiftly at
around 70-80 kms per hour so I
expected to see a nice gustfront
and then let it pass over me.
Considering there was no
gustfront, I decided to head back
up northwards.
On the way
up the Mt Lindsay Hwy, a weak
gustfront started forming!
I also knew
that the line was almost
north-south in orientation so
trying to outrun it would be
futile, unless I wanted to hire a
boat. So I just headed in the
general direction of home,
enjoying the view of the storm
where I could get it. The
gustfront was forming into
something I expected to see at
Greenbank!
Of course,
it didn't have much trouble
reaching me, considering it was
actually side-swiping me.
Experiencing the outflow winds
with leaves and small branches
flying about is always fun.
Here's the
radar as it passed over Brisbane:
Because the
line was so narrow, it didn't
take long for it to pass over
completely. This is at Mt
Gravatt-Capalaba Rd:
When I got
close to home there was carnage
in Springwood!
Or it could
be junk for an impending hard
rubbish collection.
