Mainly rain
around today it seemed, with
several cells about trying to get
started. Most activity did not
seem too severe, except maybe for
a couple of cells that went
through Caboolture which was too
far away to chase by the time the
cells has organised themselves.
Most lightning was otherwise
embedded, particularly for the
storms that I was watching west
and south.
After
dismissing the system as mostly
rain, a small red cell popped up
around Beaudesert just before 9pm
with a rain-free area in front of
it, so I took a punt and headed
down to the Jacob's Well Rd
turn-off from the M1.
Some great
flickering on the way suggested I
was in for something fun, but it
skirted mainly south refusing to
reveal many forks.

A little
difficult to see in the next
couple of photos considering the
distance, bit it looks to me like
the lightning is piercing a
shelf-cloud-looking lenticular
cloud which has formed over the
hill. I could be lying of course,
but it looked that way from my
position.
This cell
was quite lightning active but
much of it was obscured by rain.
During the light show, a display
of a different kind fired off
near the Mt Stapylton radar.

Later in
the evening around 12:30am
another line approached, this
time roughly orientated NE to SW,
rather than the usual NW to SE.
Again, most
of the lightning was well inside
the cloud, with just the odd CG.
This is one
of the oddest lightning bolts
I've seen. Looks like a
cloud-to-cloud (CC) bolt but is a
bit chunky like a CG:
Instead of
the line simply passing over, it
developed into a massive area of
rain.

This new
area of red about to go over
Logan produced a kind of roll
cloud:
And then a
double CG that made four hours of
waiting worthwhile!
The line
started around 12:30am and I
stuck around until the sun rose.
I went home
a tired boy.
