Some
activity had graced NE NSW, but
SE Qld missed out most of the day
until a cell finally crossed the
border about 10:30pm. At 10:50pm
I decided to head towards Boonah
for a look.
This lovely
cell flickered away beautifully
as I approached down the
Ipswich-Boonah Rd with some bolts
running up the outside of the
cloud. With some scud around the
bottom half of the cloud, I
figured any huge clear-air
positive strikes would be
partially obscured so I decided
to get closer for a view of the
base.

Most CGs
were tucked up behind the updraft
dropping at the front of the rain
curtain.
The orange
glow is from the intersection at
the Beaudesert turn-off.
Unfortunately, the storm was in
it's death throes at this point
without having dropped the huge
CG I was after. So I decided to
hang around for some
time-exposures of the
disintegrating cell. The
following shots are taken between
1-2am. The landscape is well lit
up thanks to a long exposure and
a nearly full moon.
Interestingly,
some time after the storm, this
roll cloud looking feature
approached from the south. I
assume it was the result of a
surface trough which GFS had
forecast. Winds which started
northerly swung to the south just
before this thing arrived. If
you're interested, surface winds
which approach from opposite
directions collide and have
virtually nowhere to go but
upwards, and this assists
convection.
Eventually,
with zero storm activity, not
even the time exposures could
keep me going. I got home around
3am.
