Severe Weather 2009 / 2010 Season

With the Bureau forecasting possible late rain, I went off and photographed a wedding without any fear of impending storm action. After the family photos and hurredly preparing to leave for another location for the wedding party photos we heard a couple of rumbles, which set my heart racing a little faster.

The location for the wedding party photos was on a stunning elevated bit of road around Mt Samson which has pretty much 360 degree views, including across to the ocean and Moreton Is. When we arrived, there were thick rain curtains surrounding us and the odd rumble. We had an hour there for wedding photos and trying to stay focused on the wedding party was a challenge! During the shoot huge CG lightning bolts dropped around 5 kms away. I always said I wanted a wedding shoot on a storm day and now I was wondering whether that was wise. The rain looked like it was coming towards us and I feared we would get rained out, ruining this couple's wedding photos. I worked as quickly as possible to get shots as I noticed raindrops falling in a nearby dam and I thought we were done for.

We continued on as light rain started to fall and I used it as an idea for some photos. Thankfully, we just got the edge of the rain as it never got any worse. It continued lightly for a little while but then let us be with a beautiful sunset sky and some mammatus to boot.

In the end we got a much more interesting and beautiful sky than if there had been no clouds at all.

Afterwards it was back to the nearby reception for a few more quick shots until my duties were over and Michelle and I went straight back up to the top of the hill to watch the storm move over the Sunshine Coast.
