Nothing
forecast for Brisbane and
marginal chances elsewhere
prevented us from getting too
disappointed with the lack of
activity today. Still, some very
interesting condensation features
at Warwick kept us awake.
Far west or
far south were the options. We
split the difference and went SW
to Warwick for easy access to
either. As we approached the
ranges, some orographic lifting
provided an interesting display.
Plenty of
moisture near the surface
assisted an odd roll cloud type
formation to our south over the
town of Warwick. A storm just
beyond it also undoubtedly played
a role.
Some
rumbles were heard but no
lightning was seen as a broader
area of fog drifted in from the
E. The oddness of the following
shot is due to the use of a
nuetral graduated filter where it
probably wasn't required. Fog is
supposed to white and bright, but
I like the effect anyway.
Here's a pretty cool
timelapse:
Our problem
now up on this small hill was
that fog had completely enveloped
us, inhibiting our view of pretty
much everything. We drove halfway
back down the hill and pulled off
the road.
I'd been
bogged when chasing once
before and I was
alone. This time Drew and I
shared the experience. Luckily we
were close to the road and it
only took about five minutes to
get out. Before one does manage
to get out though, one starts to
imagine how long one might be
stuck there. Exciting stuff.
The
activity to the N was now
approaching us with thunder
audible. As well as the fog, rain
was now becoming more widespread.
We had rain all around us but not
on us, as we were cunningly
situated pretty much on the 'W'
of Warwick below:
With a
small gust front visible over a
hill to the NW we headed up there
for a better view, waiting for
the rain to arrive, knowing it
was unfortunately only a matter
of time.
Lightning
and thunder were getting closer
but sadly the rain hit us before
we got any decent photos. Here's
some completely pointless footage
of us driving through rain
desperately trying to get some
lightning:
This large
area was turning into a line
running in a "\"
direction. We headed off for
Fernvale where we managed to
avoid the rain for a little while
and finally got to shoot a bit of lightning.
Again, it
didn't take long for the precip
to arrive when the lightning
stopped anyway. Nine hours
chasing yielded very little
today, but at least we didn't
expect much.
